Let me say long road trips can become utterly terrible if you are stuck in a cramped, metal death-trap with the wrong company, the white noise of the radio stations, and the threat of either yourself or the driver nodding off. This June, while hundreds of families take to the roads with their campers or tightly packed SUV’s I would love to share some easy and fun ways to keep the driver awake for those long drives ahead of them.
First, stock up on coffee! Caffeine is the easiest
way to keep awake. Splurge for the Starbucks double shot, or go for the traditional gas station’s black special; either one will do the job.
Turn the A/C up! Warm air makes you sleepy. Keep it cold in the car as an extra precaution.
Try an audio book! Is there a recent book out that sparked your interest but you knew you wouldn’t have time to enjoy it? A road trip is the perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge in just about any subject. My tip for you if you choose an audio book is to remember to change it up
. Listening to one voice over and over again could become monotonous, and that
will lead you to dreamland before you know it.
way to stay awake is to have the people in the car with you TALK
to you! It isn’t hard, and it could bring you closer. Of course it could also dreadfully turn awkward, so stick to stuff y’all are comfortable with. And if the conversation turns serious, don’t be afraid to just say “Hey, let’s talk about something else? Have you seen The Avengers
Don’t forget to make frequent short stops
! It is always a good idea to stretch your legs on road trips. Some rest stops have a little track, mostly so people can walk their dogs; why not do a few laps yourself - get the blood flowing and feel good as the endorphins start kicking. Some fresh air can do wonders for your mind too!
Lastly, stock up on snacks! Fruits have vitamins that keep your mind sharp. Think about staying away from fatty foods are the opposite of what your body needs when you are trying to stay awake. Stick too apples, a bag of cheerios, maybe some healthy, kettle-corn popcorn, almonds and walnuts, and soy crisps. The crunchiness of these delicious healthy foods will help keep you focused and ready to go!
Remember: It is OK to pull over and rest if you are that tired! There is no shame in checking into a hotel for the night just to sleep. Your body will thank you for it!
