Hurricane season is almost over, but as we've learned this past month, maybe nature is saving the worst for last. In three of our previous blogs, Hurricane Awareness Help
, Be Financially Prepared for Hurricane Season
, and Home Inventory Checklist
, we talked about how to prepare your home and your life should to worst hit your home.
Today let’s throw all these blogs into one easy step: Make a Plan.
It’s important that everyone in your family knows what’s going on and what to do in case of an emergency. It works for fire drills, so let’s have a hurricane drill!
1.) Make sure everyone knows important phone numbers and that children know their parent(s)’s full names. Label these numbers in cell phones as “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) next to contact’s name.
2.) Keep a list of contacts by the phone and in your emergency kit. Make sure you have a phone that is not electric in your home. If the power goes out you will be glad your landline is still working.
3.) Find the safe areas in your home when you need to shelter-in-place.
4.) Decide on a meeting place outside of your home in case you cannot return to your home.
5.) Pick local and out-of-area/out-of-state family check-in points for everyone to call if your family gets separated.
6.) Make a plan about what you will do if you need to evacuate and cannot bring your pets with you.
7.) Assemble an emergency supply kit that has enough supplies for your family for 5-7 days. Here’s a suggestion kit
8.) Lastly, keep a copy of your family emergency plan in your supply kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster.
