The times they are a changin’- for motor vehicle inspections that is. Starting March 1, 2015, Texas vehicles will no longer be issued an inspection sticker. Yes, you do still have to have your vehicle inspected, but the good news is that you will no longer have to worry about having two stickers with two separate expiration dates. Instead, your inspection will be married to your registration.
How it works
Alright gang, follow along now because this is how “Two Steps, One Sticker” is going to work:
- Before registering your vehicle you must pass an inspection no more than 90 days prior to the date your registration expires
- After inspection, your records will be updated with the inspection results and you will be issued a paper copy of the vehicle inspection report (VIR) – ALWAYS keep your VIR and be sure to make a copy of it for your records
- You will NOT be eligible for registration if your vehicle has not passed the inspection
Will the inspection requirements be changing?
No, the inspection process remains the same. The only difference is you will no longer be issued a sticker following the inspection.
Will costs be increasing?
Costs will remain the same. You will still pay the inspection station at the time of inspection, and the state office at the time of registration
What are the benefits of “Two Steps, One Sticker”?
The number one benefit of “Two Steps, One Sticker” is the amount of money that it is going to save tax payers, an estimated $2 million! Not only that, but this move will likely help to cut down on inspection sticker fraud and theft. The Texas government also is hoping that the program will help to enhance inspection compliance, which means safer roads for everyone.
