Prepping your little goblin’s and ghoul’s wardrobe:
- Costumes should be short enough to avoid being a tripping hazard.
- Be sure your little monster has comfortable shoes on, even if they don’t match.
- Add reflective tape to costumes – they come in all colors now-a-days – or tape their goodie bags so you can see them as they race to the next house.
- Masks should fit securely and do not hinder your child’s visibility.
- When using face paint read the label, make sure it is nontoxic and hypoallergenic.
- Props should be made of a flexible material, so that they do not pose a hazard if fallen on. This is another opportunity to use reflective tape.
- Do a safety check a couple days before Halloween to make sure your little monster’s costume is safe, comfortable, and perfect.
Prepping the hallow ground:
- Homeowners should prepare their homes for trick-or-treaters by removing obstacles from the yard, and keep your house well lit. If there are decorations in your yard, make sure they are displayed properly. In the middle of the excitement, children tend to forget the use of a sidewalk.
- Be sure to restrain dogs and other animals. If bringing a furry friend with you on your hunt, keep a close eye on them while they are leashed. Bring outdoor cats inside, all the festivities might spook your feline and it’s safer to keep him/her where she can’t skitter off.
- Provide plenty of treats that are individually wrapped in original packaging.
- Artificial lights and fake candles are a safe alternative to fire that could be a potential hazard. Some candle lights flicker to give the impression of a candle and some can change color add a spooky ambiance.
