The Motor Insurance Database Exists!
Most of us know that panicky feelings of seeing flashing lights in the rearview mirror. . The anticipation as the police officer approches the window. . And they always ask the classic question “May I see your driver’s license and insurance card?” Now, be honest. While it’s not difficult to change the insurance card in the car, it is still one of those tasks that gets forgotten. Maybe you get it electronically, and did not have ink in the printer for the “Print this page” page. Or perhaps it was sent via snail mail and is sitting in that stack of bills. Well, believe it or not, the police no longer give you a ticket for a reason. That reason is the Motor Insurance Database (MID). Every insurance agency provides details of your motor insurance policy to the MID. Being insurance is no longer valid unless your vehicle is listed on the MID. The police use the MID to combat uninsured driving. Often, police officers will run random license plates while driving. Guess what? If your vehicle is not registered with the MID, they might just pull you over. And this is not a small thing. There is a risk that your vehicle could be seized if the correct details have not been registered!
For normal people, the insurance provider is responsible for changing policy details in the MID within seven days of the effective date. However, for company vehicles, the policy holder must ensure that their company vehicles are registered in the MID. If you are responsible for a company vehicle and you have never heard of this, you should probably contact your insurance provider to get more information. Lucky for us, the police are not the only ones with access to the MID. It is possible for YOU to check your vehicle registration on the MID. This can be done fairly easily by logging on to www.askmid.com. All you have to do is enter your VIN, and confirm that the vehicle is registered, owned or insured by either you or your employer and regularly driven by you. Just press enter and the system will instantly tell you whether or not a policy for your vehicle is recorded on the system! If you have easy access to your VIN, why not try it now? Check to see if your vehicle is insured!
Your insurance company should ensure that your current policy is up to date in the MID. If AskMID has no record of your motor insurance, you should contact your insurance carrier immediately!
