In 2010, approximately 3.3% of the nation’s population was killed in a drunk driving related accident. This is a drastic improvement from 6.3% in 1991, but fatalities still occur. A California Highway Patrolman’s advice can eliminate your chances of ever being victimized by a drunk driver in a highway head-on collision.
Tip of the Day: When driving at night, stay out of the left lane unless you can see the rear lights of the car in front of you. Every single head on collision the patrolman came across, without exception, involved a drunk driver heading in the wrong direction (the victim’s left lane) with their headlights turned off. The sad thing is that they think they are driving in the right direction in their right lane. So remember only travel in the left lane when you can see the red rear lights of a vehicle on front of you. This advice also makes sense too when driving on hilly or curved highways when you can’t always see what’s coming at you in the distance. So stay extra safe this week, and drive in the right hand lane!
