Senate Bill 181
Effective September 1st the state of Texas will make its move into the 21st century when it begins to allow drivers to use cellphones to display their proof of insurance during traffic stops. Senate Bill 181 was passed during the 83rd legislative session and is considered a step in the right direction for the state in its continued quest to improve efficiency and convenience.
Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, co-author of the legislation states that “This bill just seemed like the common-sense thing to do. It came to us through a recommendation and provided an opportunity to make use of technology to make life a little simpler for many Texas motorists.”
Traffic stops will occur just as they did before with the only difference being your choice between handing the officer a paper copy of your insurance card or showing them the appropriate information on your phone. The information present on your insurance e-card will still be run through the same verification database.
Texas becomes the 27th state to allow electronic proof of insurance.
